Technological Progress – Our World in Data

In the chart shown we see the price changes in goods and services in the United States from 1997-2017, measured as the percentage price change since 1997. Positive values indicate an increase in prices since 1997, and negative values represent a price decline. Here we see a distinct divide between consumer durables and technologies (which have typically seen a price decline), and service-based purchases (which have increased in price).

A combination of industrial offshoring, technological innovation and economies of scale have resulted in a price decline in goods such as televisions (-96% since 1997), software (-67%), toys (-69%), and clothing (-4%). In contrast, the prices of goods and services such as education, childcare, medical care, and housing have increased significantly, rising by 150%, 110%, 100% and 58%, respectively.

The observed rise in costs of services may be partly attributed to the so-called ‘Baumol’s cost disease‘, which is an important exception

Technology Modernization Fund board reviewing just under 100 proposals

Agencies submitted just under 100 proposals to get a share of the $1 billion in the Technology Modernization Fund.

This was about the number Federal Chief Information Officer Clare Martorana was hoping for back in May.

While more specific details about the proposals, including which agencies and for what kind of projects remain hush-hush—I’m told the Office of Management and Budget is planning to brief lawmakers in the coming weeks about the TMF progress—some details have started to trickle out.

Eric Hysen, the Department of Homeland Security’s CIO, said his agency submitted four proposals to obtain TMF funding.

Eric Hysen is the CIO at the Homeland Security Department.

“I am regularly talking with my colleagues at OMB and the General Services Administration about and advocating for those projects through the process,” Hysen said at the Acquisition Trends conference sponsored by the Professional Services Council. “Those include work to modernize how

Horrible service. They will charge you for everything they can. I have never had this crappy of internet and tv service. I get better signal turning off the wifi on my phone and using my own hotspot. People through the phone are no help and have no knowledge if anything. I was never compensated for the weeks of no tv or internet even though the people on the phone promised I would be. The person called to fix the cable was supposed to come from twelve o’clock to three and finally came around six pm, but I had a job to be at so I was not there. He left a very unfriendly message for me, asking where I was. I hate comcast and only have it because where I live it is the only service I can have. Try your best to
